Not much time to read lately but have pulled in a few new acquisitions for the Guzumo Library. Fantagraphic's first two volumes in their reprinting of Floyd Gottfredson's Mickey Mouse work are a couple of beautiful books. Full of all the behind the scenes articles and biographical essays I love to read and the strips themselves. A P.K.Dick Book I picked up from an airport bargain table for 5 clams. The latest Black Jack volume from Vertical Inc. Tezuka's Black Jack is one of my favourite comics to read at the moment. Still a dozen earlier volumes I haven't read yet. I enjoyed the film A Single Man, so picked up a novel by Christopher Isherwood for a couple dollars from the Salvos.

30 clams from a second hand book shop in Wellington for a colossal Taschen volume about Men's Adventure magazines and the amazing paintings that adorned them. 2000AD collection of all the Black Hawk stories including the Sci Fi Specials, Annuals and early Tornado stories. Loved these stories when I was a kid and was surprised to find Joe Staton illustrated one of the Sci Fi Special stories. I remember back in the day liking the story but thinking the art was a bit weak compared to Bellardinelli and other European genius's that typically worked on these stories. Lastly a Biography of Tintin creator Herge told in a clear line style and in a volume similar to the Tintin books. Not a flattering portrayal but an interesting read. Good to see a few cameo appearances by Edgar P. Jacobs, Herge collaborator and creator of Blake and Mortimer, a series I've picked up on recently through the cinebook reprints.

Mighty Men & Monster Maker

Great set of mix and match stencils I had when I was a kid. The plastic segments have various hero and monster body parts in relief and you mix and match them to make exquisite corpse pics. Put some paper over the relief stencils and then scribble pen or crayon over to make images. Months of fun!

These pages were from an unfinished ambitious epic I started drawing in my teens. Included a chapter in a mini comic, Subtle #1, produced about fifteen years ago, to have something to sell at Armageddon convention in Auckland that year. Managed to sell out my small run on the first day with Chris Knox spending his last two dollars on my one of the last copies. I had a friend in Auckland who worked for a foreign embassy at the time so at night time we snuck in and made a bunch more copies to sell on the Sunday.

Have been a busy lad with a large research project hence not much posting of late.

Started a new blog over here: LINES ON PAPER

Eighteen years ago when I was a young man full of hope, wonder and ambition, I wrote and drew a couple hundred pages of comics. Then I took a break for a while. Watched a bit of television for while. Played some music for while.

Russian Magazines from the Fifties

Last year I bought a small pile of Russian Magazines for a few long bills at the markets. They're filled with ye olde time photography and illustrations of the lives of Russian people in the fifties. They also contain a bunch of pages of Russian cartoons. I wish my little bro was around to translate these. From the illustrations I gather the Russian sense of humour is similar to the rest of the world, just more a little more communismy.

Camberwell Haul #10

It was cold and misty last Sunday when I made my way to the Camberwell Markets. Biked around a smashed up television pushed off Punt Rd onto the underpass. It hadn't shattered everywhere just crumpled which I'm sure was a disappointment. Further down the road I spotted a spotted a Helicopter hovering about five metres above the tram tracks on Commercial Road. Alas I forgot my camera.

It was pretty early when I arrived so did a few rounds of the whole market and glad I did cause I found a bunch of these on the second and third time around.

5 English kids annuals for fifty pesos each.

An Black N White Indie Anthology 'Steel Dragon' for one clam. There was a copy of The Protectors #1 for 1 clam, a really terrible looking black n white book, I didn't buy it but remembered Dash Shaw talking about it here. if you have a look at the link it's worth reading the comments section.

How to Read Donald Duck for five clams - heard about this for many a year, thought it was time to give it a read.

A book of George Carlin's, Last Words, for four clams from the local bookhouse. Carlin created an amazing body of work in his lifetime and is one of the people who shaped my beliefs regarding religion. This reminds me I have hours of his stuff I still haven't listened to. No time!

The real find of the morning was an autobiography of Leo Baxendale that I had no idea existed for ten clams. I read a lot of Baxendale's work when I was a lad and this book recounts forty years of his career as a cartoonist. I've only skimmed through it but was thrilled to find a pic of Ken Reid in there. Ken Reid is one of my all time favourite English cartoonists, I loved his work on Face-ache, Frankie-Stein and others. Baxendale also recounts his friendships with other DC Thomson cartoonists Davey Law and Dudley Watkins.

Supanova Perth 2011 Report

Supanova Perth 2011 was the best convention I've been to in recent years. A great crowd of interesting people packed into a perfect size venue. In comparison to other con's the size of the aisles were perfect for keeping a steady flow of folk coming by but not too small that there was trouble with congestion.

The Cosplay kids were out in force, dozens of Doctor Who's, mainly the last two incarnations but I also saw a Tom Baker. Several years ago these kids could have cared less about the Doctor! I watched Hartnell, Pertwee and Baker in my youth! I'm a true fan! But seriously i'm glad he is uber popular again, long may he regenerate.

I've yet to see The Phantom at one of these things, I would have thought with his popularity in Australia there would have been one or two pot-bellied middle aged folk in purple spandex. Maybe I need to step up to the plate?

Anyway I had a blast, sold a Moses strength pile of comics, ate some good food and met some nice folk. My host, Paul Spencer, was super duper, showed me around Perth and introduced me to some some cool folk.

This fella had the table to the right of me. Sixteen year old Reece Hauxby, Australia's youngest Dark Science Fantasy Author. A steady audience of all ages bought his debut novel, Justin Gale Deals With Death, and he had many young giggling schoolgirls lining up to have their photo taken with him. I had none.

The lovely and talented folk of Monster Robot Industries, Jess Mcleod and Edward J Grug. I've been a fan of these guys for a few years thanks to a mutual friend, Ive Sorocuk, and it was nice to finally meet them. These guys take making comics seriously but dont take comics themselves too seriously which I wish more folk would do. Too many grim dark generic avenger of the night comics out there for my liking. Monster Robot comics are cute, funny, and brilliantly coloured. There's a place for all sorts of comics in the world but more comics should be like these! I had some great chats with these guys about supey- hero comics and buying comic books from the glorious Book Depository. Meeting Jess and Grug was one of the highlights of my weekend.

On Saturday night I tagged along with Paul, his lady Kim, and his flatmate Matt. To avoid confusion they decided to refer to me as Emery for the evening which was funny as most of my pals call me that anyway. We went out to a secret bar with no signage at the back of a winding alley covered in some sweet art. Later we popped into a friend's 30th Party. It was a 1980's themed party, we were woefully prepared.

I swiped the zip-a-tone from the Abbie and Slats panel below. Written initially by Al Capp and illustrated by Raeburn Van Buren, I bought a handful of these from an art dealer a few years ago for twenty dollars apiece. I wish I had bought more. The dealer had 3000 of them, probably a significant portion of the thirty-four years run.

Camberwell Haul #9 + Comical Rambling

Bought a few bits and bobs from the Camberwell Fair. It was a beautiful misty morning a lot of damp in the air so I think folk were keeping their paper goods under wraps. I knew one bloke had a small pile of English comics last week, so after rummaging through a few boxes he found them and I pulled out three old Valiant and Hurricane comics for ten clams. The back covers are below, not sure of the artist, but click to embiggen. I love comics on old newsprint and the way printed colour looks on it.

An old Knockout Fun Book from 1952 filled with ye olde English comic strips and stories. Billy Bunter on the cover is also featured in the Valiant comics published 12 years later with stories by Reg Parlett. I picked up a couple Reg Parlett Bunter pages on Ebay recently, looking forward to seeing his original lines up close.

The Comics by Brian Walker is a compendium of his pre 1945 and post 1945 books on American newspaper strips. Weighing in at a massive 672 pages touches on a lot of material I have in other volumes but for the bargain price of thirty mangos I could not resist. Something to pore over on cold Winter nights. I found this baby at Book Talk Cafe in Richmond on the trek home.

Valiant Back Covers

On my trip home from recent Camberwell treks I've been catching up with Marty Trengove, Comicker behind Roscoe the Dawg, Ace Detective, he's been great to chat with about Australian comics past and present. Today I warned him of the perils of watching The Human Centipede.

This is how I file my comix/gag notes/fevered ramblings and original pages, I've tried many systems but always come back to this one.

Picked up a few books for ten clams at the local Salvation Army. One of the better Salvo's for books and comics in Melbourne, I pop in two or three times a week and find all sorts of treasures. I have a few Murray Ball collections of work pre: Footrot Flats so was delighted to find his Bruce the Barbarian book. A three clam copy of the complete Persepolis will make a good gift for someone. Two Astro Boy Tezuka collections from Dark Horse, the stories don't appeal much to me, I prefer his Buddha and Black Jack series but I had to buy these for a pittance of clams to look at the art. Also could not resist grabbing an ACE double sci-fi book with a novel by Dean R. Koontz backed with Susan K. Putney

A nice stash of French comic albums...A Massive Moebius collection and an equally massive Druillet one. Lots of amazing Sci-Fi and fantasy artwork, Psychedelic colours, Mind bending futuristic city-scapes, and a steal at 5 Bananas a book. Also a couple Druillet Hardcovers from Dargaud, there were more there but i was trying to exercise restraint.

A beaten up Dell comic, The Outer Limits #11, 4 shillings, Something to remind me that I have the complete original series of The Outer Limits and The Twilight Zone lying around here waiting for me to watch them.

A hardcover collection of Richard Corben's work including a biography, flicking through it I noticed a section on his working processes which looks very interesting. love Corben's work, when I was fifteen a fellow was advertising comics for sale in the local paper (waaay pre-internet). I went, picked up a few goodies with my paper run wages including one of Corben's Den albums. He told me he was a drug dealer in Australia and was visiting his parents in Napier. He had laundered his money by spending $50,000 on comics. "The cops would never believe comics could be worth $50,000!!" he told me. Then he shipped them over to Napier. This was in the eighties and from the amount and quality of comics he had I believed him. I visited him one more time at his parents house were he had stashed all the comics in their attic. I can't remember for the life of me remember where that was though. I often wonder if the guy ended up a casualty of the gang wars in Australia and maybe those comics are still there.

A bunch of books from 25 cent bins. Loved Peter MIlligan's work for 2000AD, his Human Target revamp for Vertigo, and also his collaboration with Michael Allred on X-Force and X-Statix. Duncan Fegredo's no slouch either so looking forward to reading their collaboration on Enigma. Also a bunch of Comikers I dig, Cam Kennedy, Eddie Campbell, Steve Rude, Hembeck, Mike Mignola, on various projects. Also some...ahem...supey-hero comics.
