God is With Me This Week

Walking down a crowded Melbourne city street a $5 note floated down in front of me. Thanks God.

Doujicon 07

Nerds and Geeks

Spent yesterday at the Australian comic creators convention Doujicon 07. Set up in a relatively small room at the Monash University, about 30kms out of Melbourne central, it was an interesting day to see what passes for an industry/scene here. I didn't really have a good look at all the work there but what i saw was some interesting humour titles, some vertigo influenced stuff and a healthy dose of manga. I didn't have a heckload of titles to sell, but did pretty well with some folks buying one of each and telling their friends to come get some funny comics from the New Zealander on the little table at the end of the room.

Don't know why but by lunch time I wanted to fight this guy

A young Italian guy, Bruno, was in tears (of joy), relating how he had been through the exact same experience as the main character in the siblings story. he knew "just what that felt like". Oh right so his sister had tricked him into urinating in her mouth? I try not to shake hands with too many people at these things.

Another bloke approached me clasping his newly bought manga books. "I'm cant believe I found these Otakuku (possibly spelt wrong) books here!" "If anyone could read my tee shirt I would be even more sad and pathetic!" I asked what the japanese figures on his shirt read, he replied, "I am single." With that he walked off muttering "I'm so lonely..." Always good to have a a good sense of one's self I guess.

Overall I was glad I went, I started the day feeling pretty low about the state of comics in general. The following quote comes from a pretty famous comic creating fella, Dawyn Cooke at the San diego comic con:

“I think to be honest the Direct Market comics that we’re all here talking about are on their way to extinction. I don’t see any way around it. It doesn’t matter how much money the Spider-Man movie makes, it doesn’t bring more people into shops.”

Sadly I think he's right. New media are taking over and maybe 5 years from now single comics may be history. I'm sure graphic novel collections will still be published but singles sales seem to be in constant decline. If the damn things were cheaper like they used to be when i was a kid then maybe more kids would read them these days. I guess those days are over but i sure do miss comics printed with dodgy colour and black n white on news print for thirty eight cents.

Manfighters The Brown Edition

During my first month here I worked delivering phone books to the phone number needy people of Australia. Each pallet of books contained sheets of this nifty brown paper used to seperate layers. I grabbed as much of it as I could and it makes for pretty decent covers.

Satanic Melbourne

The Necrominus Decrominom was built in Albert Park in 1925 as a storage chamber for ritual sacrifice during the yearly ritual Pangastuthia (Feast of Demons)

Close up of the Necrominus Decrominom. Plate on the base is inscribed with: Trinemulon Dadelus Sadeum Morbeum Acemumus (Many Beast will devour souls forever)

The Pythagaria Stem Globe was constructed in 1929 above the central City of Melbourne. Used at the time as a conduit to establish passages for demonic posession and transference. Currently the globe sits astride the ANZ Bank Head office of Australia.

EEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

Life IS Good

Paint

I Don't Want To Die Yet

Every morning I bike to work down a dark side street to avoid being run over by maniacs on the main drag. Yesterday a bat flew right in front of me, scaring the heck out of me, with it's mighty 50 cm wingspan and evil possibly red eyes.

This morning a bat (I'm presuming it's the same one) flew right into my face. ARGHHHH!! It was all tough and leathery, it happened so fast it was like mothman. I pumped my mega legs as fast as I could and prayed it hadn't latched onto my back pack. Further down the street in a street lamp safety zone I patted my face, it was damp, Bat's demon blood? Tears of fear? I wasn't sure. I made my way to work with the nerves of a teenage crack addict john who hadn't made his pimps cut.

Beat

Ever since i saw the superb flick Brother a few years back i've been fascinated with Director/Writer Takeshi Kitano. This weekend i'm gonna watch Sonatine, Dolls, and Violent Cop and to top it off I'm reading Beat Takeshi verses Takeshi Kitano which the local library kindly purchased at my insistance. he reminds me a lot of one of my best mate's dad when i was a kid. He taught me how to play chess and would never let me ever win which was pretty cool.

Steven's Semen

A crudely rendered Panel from a story I'm working on, The Life and Times of Steven's Semen.

Vegetables

My first attempt at a vege garden wasn't too successful cause I didn't read the instructions and buried the seeds about 10 times too deep. Second attempt is coming along swell with green shoots popping everywhere.

Every morning on my way out and every evening I get home i run to my garden to see how many mms it's grown...

My New Sweet Ride

Picked this sucker up for free. Bike lock cost me $3. Tyres currently held together by dust and leaves but hopefully i find some free new ones sooon...

Drawing and writing many comic.

Start work as postie lord tomorrow.

Have discovered Mocchachino (sp?)

Have found a couple places out of central city that sell good doughnuts.

Might go to Rarotonga if I can come up with $5000 in the month.

Found out yesterday that a friends wife was childhood friends with another friend that almost accidently killed another guy that i didn't actually know.

Tomorrow will be thrilling.
